Who came up with AWS?
Black and Pinkham wrote up the idea, which made its way to Jeff Bezos, who greenlighted the proposal. Pinkham then led a team to build Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), which are virtual machines as a service and one of AWS’s first products released in 2006.

What does AWS run on?
Amazon Linux is AWS’s own flavor of a Linux operating system. Customers using our EC2 service and all the services running on EC2 can use Amazon Linux as their operating system of choice. Over the years we have customized Amazon Linux based on the needs of AWS customers.

How did Amazon start?
